Spec files are external memory that survives context resets

When you /clear your context, everything the agent learned that session vanishes. The solution: a specs/ folder where design.md captures the problem and approach, implementation.md tracks progress, and decisions.md records architectural choices with reasoning. The agent reads these files first in every new session, instantly recovering the full context of the work.

This is Files are the universal interface between humans and agents applied to project management. The files serve dual duty: humans write and review them, agents read and update them. Keeping PRs small and focused (few files, one focused change) means specs files can fully describe each unit, connecting to Autonomous coding loops need small stories and fast feedback to work.

The deeper claim: planning isn’t overhead, it’s the mechanism that makes agent-assisted development work. Upfront planning saves multiples of coding time because the plan itself becomes persistent context. This is why The context window is the fundamental constraint — everything else follows — specs files are how you cheat the constraint by offloading state to disk where it persists indefinitely.
